Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire: Highlights of 2016
Kralendijk, December 29th, 2016 – Now that the year is coming to an end, Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) would like to thank everyone that has supported the organization’s conservation efforts in 2016.
This year, STCB celebrated 25 years of ongoing work protecting endangered sea turtles on Bonaire. Local companies adopted 25 sea turtle nests, and protected a total of 2446 hatchlings!
More good news for Bonaire’s sea turtles: statisticians at the Dutch Caribbean Biodiversity Database found a moderate increased trend in total number of nests on Bonaire and Klein Bonaire since monitoring began in 2002. This is without taking into account this year, which has been STCB’s highest nesting year ever with 114 confirmed nests!
This was the fifth consecutive year of the Beachkeepers program running successfully, with 40 volunteers this year! STCB’s Beachkeepers patrol the beaches most used by turtles, reporting signs of nesting and hatching, as well as monitoring the safety status of nests.
In 2016, STCB also continued its partnership with the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to study connectivity among sea turtles within the Dutch Caribbean. Together with NWO, STCB deployed three transmitters on green turtles from Lac Cai – and one of these turtles then migrated to an island in Venezuela called La Tortuga!
This year, STCB also captured and released 300 sea turtles during in-water surveys. This is the highest number of sea turtles captured since STCB established standardized methods for the in-water survey and tagging program in 2003!
Another highlight of this year: STCB had its first peer reviewed paper published on post breeding migrations. STCB was also part of a joint publication on growth rates of hawksbills in the Caribbean, and the organization is participating in another joint publication on green turtles.
STCB also introduced new merchandise items and increased the number of STCB vendors on the island! Turtle-lovers can now buy STCB merchandise at seven vendors around Bonaire: VIP Diving, Great Adventures Bonaire, Mangrove Center, Dive Friends Bonaire Retail, Dive Inn, Hamlet Oasis, and Caribe Car Rental, as well as the STCB office at Kaya Korona #53.
STCB signed a contract with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for three more years of funding, and also gained an important new funder: Stichting Dierenlot. In October, STCB received a DierenLot Animal Rescue Vehicle from the new funder.
Last, but not least, STCB partnered with Wild Conscience to protect the beaches of the south and the mangroves at Sorobon. These works were part of a wider project, the Ecological Restoration of Lac and the South of Bonaire, which is coordinated by the openbaar lichaam Bonaire and funded with the so called ‘natuurgelden’ made available by the Dutch government.
Thanks to the willingness and generosity of STCB’s supporters, 2016 was another great year for Bonaire’s sea turtles!

Kralendijk, 29 December 2016 – Het einde van het jaar is in zicht, en daarom wil Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) iedereen bedanken die in 2016 het werk van de organisatie ondersteund heeft.
Dit jaar vierde STCB dat de organisatie zich al 25 jaar inzet voor de bescherming van Bonaire’s bedreigde zeeschildpadden. Lokale bedrijven adopteerden 25 zeeschildpadden nesten, en beschermden daarmee 2446 baby schildpadden!
Nog meer goed nieuws voor de schildpadden op Bonaire: statistici van de Dutch Caribbean Biodiversity Database hebben geconstateerd dat, sinds de start van het controleren van nesten in 2002, er een groei heeft plaatsgevonden in het totaal aantal nesten dat gelegd is op Bonaire en Klein Bonaire. Hierbij is dit jaar, dat met 114 bevestigde nesten het beste nestseizoen is, nog niet eens meegerekend!
Het Beachkeeper programma, met dit jaar 40 vrijwilligers, bestaat alweer 5 jaar! STCB’s Beachkeepers controleren de stranden die regelmatig bezocht worden door schildpadden, daarbij lettend op tekenen van nieuwe en uitgekomen nesten. Daarnaast controleren de Beachkeepers de veiligheid van de nesten.
In 2016, heeft STCB haar samenwerking met de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) voortgezet en de interconnectie tussen zeeschildpadden in Caribisch Nederland onderzocht. Samen met NWO heeft STCB drie zeeschildpadden uit Lac Cai uitgerust met een transmitter – en een van deze schildpadden is vervolgens naar La Tortuga (Venezuela) geëmigreerd!
Tijdens in-water surveys heeft STCB dit jaar 300 schildpadden gevangen en weer vrijgelaten. Dit is het grootste aantal schildpadden dat STCB heeft gevangen sinds 2003, toen begonnen werd met gestandaardiseerde methoden voor in-water surveys en tagging programma’s!
Nog een highlight van dit jaar: STCB heeft haar eerste peer reviewed paper – over migratieroutes van zeeschildpadden na het broeden – gepubliceerd. Daarnaast heeft STCB meegewerkt aan een publicatie over groeicijfers van Karetschildpadden in de Caraïben, en werkt de organisatie momenteel mee aan een publicatie over groene zeeschildpadden.
STCB heeft dit jaar ook nieuwe merchandise producten uitgebracht én het aantal STCB verkooppunten op Bonaire uitgebreid! Schildpadden liefhebbers kunnen de STCB merchandise nu kopen bij zeven locaties rondom Bonaire: VIP Diving, Great Adventures Bonaire, Mangrove Center, Dive Friends Bonaire Retail, Dive Inn, Hamlet Oasis, and Caribe Car Rental, en het STCB kantoor op de Kaya Korona #53.
STCB heeft een contract ondertekend met het Wereld Natuur Fonds (WNF) voor nog drie jaar sponsoring, en bovendien een nieuwe, belangrijke sponsor gekregen: Stichting DierenLot. In oktober heeft STCB een DierenLot Ambulance ontvangen van de nieuwe donor.
Tot slot heeft STCB dit jaar ook samengewerkt met Wild Conscience om de stranden in het zuiden en de mangroves bij Sorobon te beschermen. Dit was onderdeel van het Ecologisch Herstel Lac gebied en Zuidelijk Bonaire, een project dat wordt gecoördineerd door het openbaar lichaam Bonaire en gefinancierd middels natuurgelden van de Nederlandse Overheid.
Dankzij de bereidwilligheid en vrijgevigheid van iedereen die het werk van STCB ondersteunt, was 2016 wederom een fantastisch jaar voor de zeeschildpadden van Bonaire!
