Curacao to host LACNIC Internet conference in July

Curacao to host LACNIC Internet conference in July
BY GERARD BEST
WILLEMSTAD, Curaçao. June 06, 2019—An international slate of technology experts will headline a major Internet conference in Curacao next month. Called LACNIC on the Move, the high-level tech event will focus mainly on critical issues of local and regional Internet development and cybersecurity.
The meeting is hosted by Bureau Telecommunicatie & Post (BT&P), the telecommunications regulator, and organised by the Latin America and Caribbean Internet Addresses Registry (LACNIC), an organisation that distributes and manages Internet number resources in Latin America and the Caribbean.
“LACNIC on the Move Curaçao will draw on the expertise of a range of Internet development and cybersecurity specialists, in order to address specific local and regional issues,” said Carlos Martinez, chief technology officer at LACNIC.
The three-day event starts on July 3 with an open forum to discuss the benefits of IPv6, the Internet Protocol which addresses the depletion of unallocated numbering resources in the region and around the world. Franklin Sluis, chief executive officer of BT&P, will speak at the start of the opening day.
On July 4 and 5, a specially designed workshop called AMPARO will focus on establishing and strengthening Cybersecurity Incident Response Teams and building capacity for responding to local and regional cybersecurity challenges.
“Cyber security is key to national and regional security. As governments, businesses and other important institutions place greater reliance on Internet-based technologies, more capacity has to be built to protect our computer networks and systems,” said Graciela Martinez, who coordinates LACNIC’s Warning, Advice and Reporting Point (WARP) initiative.
Since 2015, the LACNIC on the Move conferences have been held in Belize, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Paraguay, Sint Maarten and Suriname.
“LACNIC on the Move events take place around Central and South America and the Caribbean, with the objective of giving the local community the opportunity to discuss local challenges to Internet development and, more importantly, to find actionable and concrete solutions,” said Kevon Swift, Head of Integration and Strategic Relations at LACNIC.
All LACNIC on the Move events are free of charge and open to the public. Registration and other information are available at http://onthemove.lacnic.net or by email at onthemove@lacnic.net.
