On Monday, March 9, 2026, the women working in the Parliament of Sint Maarten—serving as Members of Parliament, Secretariat staff, and Faction staff—came together for a Network Gathering in observance of International Women’s Day 2026 under the theme “Give to Gain.”
After a brief introduction by the Secretary General of Parliament and welcome remarks by the President of Parliament, the Hon. Sarah A. Wescot-Williams, participants received an inspirational talk from guest speaker Mrs. Elaine Gumbs-Vlaun, the first woman elected to political office in Sint Maarten in 1983.
Mrs. Gumbs-Vlaun shared reflections on her early years on Sint Maarten, her educational journey, and her professional and political careers. She also spoke about the development of Sint Maarten over the years and its impact on households and society. In addition, she expressed her hopes for the future position of women and emphasized the importance of women supporting and uplifting one another.
The Network Gathering concluded with a group photo of the women at Parliament, highlighting the theme “Give to Gain” which aims for all to Give to Gain gender equality.
