Catholic church sex abuse scandals
It’s been happening for almost 30 years, a deadly threat to children and communities, terrifying and grotesque, same as any other organized crime, yes, it is sex abuse scandals by pastors and priests worldwide.
Over 4,000 cases of sexual abuse in the Catholic church were reported over the years, among them is the latest scandal of Australian Cardinal George Pell, one of the most senior members of the Catholic Church, charged with multiple historical sexual assault offenses, causing damage to the faith of millions of Catholics and to the credibility of the Church as a whole, and if the victims didn’t come out to speak about it, who would have known what’s going on behind closed doors.
What did the church do about it? What do the victims and their families want? They want for sure justice and punishment to take place, how on earth does church allow such abuse to happen? Many inquiries have shown testimonies from priests, bishops and nuns pointing out that they believe that it is God’s work to protect the church and cure pedophiles through prayers therefore they did not report such abuse to police because this would have created a scandal leading thousands of souls to lose their faith in a time where families allow their children to participate in ministry programs to know more about religion and spiritual mentoring, and understand more about Christianity, most of the victims cannot reveal what is happening to them at the beginning because they are intimidated by ideas such as self-sacrificing , suffering and obedience for salvation.
All forms of child sexual abuse are a violation to human rights, it breaks his personality and social function, his health and behavior, and in severe cases it may lead to suicide.
Sadly, in most child sex abuse cases, religious beliefs and trust of parents for members of the church showed that they could not foresee the possibility that priests could sexually abuse their children causing them trauma and betraying their own vows, societies must understand that this problem can happen anywhere anytime regardless of religions or ethnicity and church has an obligation towards preventing this kind of crimes by controlling and monitoring inside activities where children and vulnerable adults are involved.
Abuse is all about using power in the name of God to hurt vulnerable children, survivors of self injuries of a sin they think they did allow it cannot forget it easily, they will walk away with anger and mistrust in God for letting this happen, and fear from their parent’s punishments , children are born to be treated fairly, live and grow healthy, be protected from violence, abuse and neglect and should never be punished in a way that humiliates or hurt them (UNICEF), Pope Francis has told bishops around the world they must adhere to a policy of “zero tolerance” for clergy who sexually abuse children and begged forgiveness for a sin that shames us . © Reinshe 2017
