                     POLICE PRESS RELEASE

Armed robbery

Detectives at the Special Unit Robbery are presently investigating an armed robbery which took place at Big Family Restaurant located on the L.B. Scot road on Monday August 12th at approximately 09.40 p.m. According to reports two men armed with handguns stormed into the establishment and under threat of these weapons stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the register. After committing this act both suspects fled on foot in the direction of Reward.

Shots fired at the Point Blanch Prison  

On Tuesday August 13th at approximately 07.50 a.m. the Emergency Central Dispatch received a call from Point Blanche Prison informing them that one of the guards on duty in one of the towers at the prison noticed that an unknown man with his face covered with a white T-shirt and wearing a dark blue jeans was trying to throw a black plastic bag over the wall of the institution.   

The guard then fired two warning shots at which time the suspect fled the scene through the bushes and not getting the opportunity to throw the bag and its content over the wall. According to witnesses the suspect then jumped into a black SUV that was parked in the area and he and the driver of that vehicle fled the Point Blanche area.

Several police patrols and detectives were sent to the scene to investigate what had taken place. Based on the information that was gathered during the investigation a suspect identified with initials J.A.J. (20) was arrested and taken to the Police headquarters in Philipsburg where he is being held for questioning and further investigation. No one was injured during this incident. The investigation continues.

 

Pedestrian struck by motor vehicle

The police traffic department is presently investigation a traffic accident which took place on Monday August 12th at approximately 07.25 p.m. on the Sucker garden road in the vicinity of Golden Barrel cactus drive also known as Becky Hill. This traffic accident involved a motor vehicle with license plate P-7524 en a pedestrian identified with initials C.Y. (45).

According to the report, the victim was walking down the hill toward Philipsburg while the motor vehicle was coming up the hill from the opposite direction. The victim suddenly lost his step and stumbled onto the street at which time he was struck by the vehicle that was passing by.  The victim fell to the ground and suffered numerous scratches and bruising to his body and face, a laceration to his right hand and a broken right shoulder.

The victim was treated on the scene by paramedics and then taken to the Sint Maarten Medical Center for further treatment. At the medical center the victim was treated and admitted to the hospital for observation and further treatment. The excessive use of alcohol also attributed to the cause of the accident.
