Banking executive Sharon Hassell appointed acting island governor
Statia Government
Branch Manager at MCB Statia, Sharon Hassell, has been sworn in as acting island governor. The 58-year-old Statia native took the oath on Wednesday 10 April at the office of the island governor. The oath was administered by the acting Kingdom representative, Jan Helmond, who earlier in the day had sworn in Alida Francis as the island’s first female governor.
Ms Hassel’s appointment, which is for a period of one year, came after consultation with the Island Council. As acting island governor, she will assume the responsibilities of the island governor in the absence of Ms Francis, with all legal powers associated with the office. This will ensure the continuity of the office of the island governor.
Prior to taking the helm at MCB, she was Branch Manager Windward Island Bank Ltd, and her great social involvement means she knows the island well and has a keen eye for what is happening in Statia
The acting Kingdom representative expressed his confidence in the newly-appointed acting island governor, stating: “With Ms Hassell, Statia has a committed acting island governor. I look forward to good cooperation.”
