CURAÇAO PROUDLY REPRESENTED AT THE ‘MLB INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE SHOWCASE’
WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao will be proudly represented at the upcoming MLB International College Showcase tour in Phoenix, Arizona. Farid Cijntje (3B) and Jeremiah Jones (RHP) from the MLB Elite Development (EDP) Curaçao will represent the island at this prestigious event that will take place from September 23rd to October 4th, 2024. This event will bring together the top prospects from 4 different continents and allow them to showcase their talents in front of both collegiate and professional scouts over 2 weeks.
30 high school-aged international baseball players from 8 countries will take part in the “MLB International College Showcase” at various locations throughout Greater Phoenix. The young athletes of the MLB World Select Team – representing Australia, Brazil, Curaçao, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Netherlands, and Spain – will participate in this special showcase experience with activities including visiting local colleges and universities, competing against teams at various levels (high school, college and professional), and a pro style workout day for college recruiters and professional scouts from MLB teams. Major League Baseball has hosted the international college showcase since 2015, highlighting the commitment to growing the game internationally.
The MLB World Select Team will be coached by a number of former Major League, Minor League and International players and coaches, including the following: Jeff Conine (USA) – Two-time World Series Champion; Two-time MLB All-Star; 1995 MLB All-Star MVP, Roger McDowell (USA) – 1986 World Series Champion; former Major League Pitching Coach (Atlanta Braves & Baltimore Orioles, Jon Debus (USA) – Former Minor League Player, Coach & Manager; Former Major League Bullpen Coach, Marco Mendoza (Mexico) – Former Mexican League Minor League player, MLB international pitching coach. Both Debus and Mendoza are familiar with the Curaçao players as they both have spend time coaching the local EDP players. Coach Rudy van Heydoorn of the Curaçao EDP program will accompany the players to Phoenix. Van Heydoorn, a former Minor Leaguer himself, is a catching coach with international playing experience (Italy, Netherlands) and is expanding his knowledge by attending various MLB events and clinics. Last June he also travelled with the Curaçao EDP to Vero Beach, Florida.
The Curaçao Elite Development Program is very proud to be able to send Farid Cijntje and Jeremiah Jones to the MLB International College Showcase. Both players are very disciplined and dedicated to the development of their baseball skills. Cijntje, who plays third base, is also a switch hitter. This specialized skill is very much sought after by scouts of colleges and MLB teams. Jones is a right-hand pitcher who has seen his speed increase steadily in the past couple of months while training in the program. At the tournament that was held in Vero Beach, Jones threw in the low 90s and his coaches believe he has the potential to throw even harder as he progresses and his body develops. Curaçao EDP hopes that with the participation of Cijntje and Jones at the showcase that they will open the door in the future for more players of the island. Participation of these two players in the MLB International College Tour will function also as a positive promotion for our island. The Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) and Curaçao Baseball Development Foundation (CBDF), proud sponsors of the local MLB Elite Program, wishes both Cijntje and Jones good luck and are looking forward to their performance in Arizona.
