KPSM outlines procedures for handling missing person reports

The Sint Maarten Police Force (KPSM) hereby outlines the procedures followed when handling missing-person reports, in accordance with national laws governing privacy and the protection of personal data.

KPSM applies different protocols depending on whether the missing individual is a minor or an adult, and whether the person is a resident or a visitor/tourist.

Missing Minors (Under 18 Years Old)

Due to the high level of vulnerability and the urgent safety risks involved, missing minors receive immediate priority.

Once a report is filed and verified, KPSM disseminates the information to the public as soon as possible, including photos and identifying details when necessary.

Public assistance is requested promptly in these cases, as rapid community response can be crucial to the safe recovery of the minor.

Missing Adults (18+) and Visitors/Tourists

For missing adults or foreign visitors, KPSM follows a more structured process.

Before releasing any information to the media or the public, several important steps must be completed, including:

• Verification of the report

• Assessment of the circumstances

• Confirmation of the individual’s safety risks

• Compliance with privacy and data-protection laws

• Contact with family members, caretakers, or consular representatives (when applicable)

Only after these steps are satisfied, and when deemed necessary for the person’s safety, will information be released publicly.

KPSM reminds the public that privacy regulations play a significant role in how and when personal details—including photos—may be shared. These protocols protect individuals from unnecessary exposure while ensuring that each missing-person case receives the appropriate and lawful response.
