 PNP-FRACTIE VRAAGT MET SPOED VERGADERING AAN OVER TOERISTISCHE DRAAGKRACHT VAN CURAÇAO: “TOERISME MOET VOOR CURAÇAO ZIJN, NIET CURAÇAO VOOR TOERISME!”

WILLEMSTAD, CURAÇAO – 31 maart 2026 — De fractie van de Partido Nashonal di Pueblo (PNP) heeft een dringend verzoek ingediend bij de Voorzitter van de Staten van Curaçao om zo spoedig mogelijk een Centrale Commissievergadering bijeen te roepen over de toeristische draagkracht van ons land. De PNP-fractie is bezorgd dat de huidige explosieve en versnelde groei van het toerisme ten koste gaat van de ‘Yu di Kòrsou’ (de lokale bevolking).

Curaçao is onze trots, ons thuis en ons erfgoed. Hoewel de PNP economische ontwikkeling omarmt en bezoekers verwelkomt, is de huidige realiteit verontrustend. Deze disproportionele expansie legt een enorme druk op onze infrastructuur, zoals water, elektriciteit en wegennet, verdringt de lokale bevolking van de woningmarkt en bedreigt de authenticiteit en de natuur die de ziel van ons land vormen.

De toeristische sector zelf heeft onlangs via CHATA aan de bel getrokken en gepleit voor een strategische heroriëntatie en toerisme met een hoge waarde en een lage impact. “Wanneer de sector zelf vraagt om een stap terug te doen en goed te kijken naar wat we aan het doen zijn, kan het Parlement niet werkloos toekijken,” benadrukt de fractie.

Om ervoor te zorgen dat de ontwikkeling van ons land de lokale bevolking en ons erfgoed op de eerste plaats zet, wil de PNP de volgende punten bespreken tijdens de vergadering:

• Destination Carrying Capacity Study: Een analyse van het maximale aantal bezoekers en kamers dat Curaçao aankan.
• Tourism Masterplan 2027-2032: Hoe dit de bescherming van onze cultuur, infrastructuur en de levenskwaliteit van onze mensen zal garanderen.
• Ruimtelijke Ordening (EOP): Het beleid rondom vergunningen voor megaprojecten die onze kusten blokkeren voor de lokale bevolking en onze natuur en monumenten aantasten.
• Lokale Economie: Maatregelen om ervoor te zorgen dat toerismegelden lokaal blijven circuleren en een waardig leven bieden aan werknemers en het midden- en kleinbedrijf (MKB).

De PNP-fractie heeft verzocht om vertegenwoordigers van de Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB), de Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association (CHATA) en de CARMABI Foundation uit te nodigen om hun expertise te delen tijdens de bijeenkomst.

 PNP FACTION URGENTLY REQUESTS MEETING ON CURAÇAO’S TOURISM CARRYING CAPACITY: “TOURISM SHOULD BE FOR CURAÇAO, NOT CURAÇAO FOR TOURISM!”

WILLEMSTAD, CURAÇAO – March 31, 2026 — The Partido Nashonal di Pueblo (PNP) faction has submitted an urgent petition to the President of the Parliament of Curaçao to convene a Central Committee meeting as soon as possible to address the tourism carrying capacity of our country. The PNP faction is deeply concerned that the current explosive and accelerated growth of tourism is happening at the expense of the local people (‘Yu di Kòrsou’).

Curaçao is our pride, our home, and our heritage. While the PNP embraces economic development and welcomes visitors, the current reality is alarming. This disproportionate expansion places immense pressure on our infrastructure, such as water, electricity, and roads, pushes locals out of the housing market, and threatens the authenticity and nature that form the very soul of our island.

The tourism sector itself, through CHATA, recently raised the alarm, advocating for a strategic reorientation toward high-value, low-impact tourism. “When the sector itself asks to take a breather and re-evaluate what we are doing, Parliament cannot sit idly by,” the Faction emphasizes.

To ensure that our country’s development prioritizes the local community and our heritage, the PNP wishes to debate the following points during the Central Committee meeting:

• Destination Carrying Capacity Study: An analysis of the maximum number of visitors and rooms that Curaçao can sustain.
• Tourism Masterplan 2027-2032: How this plan will guarantee the protection of our culture, infrastructure, and the quality of life of our people.
• Urban Planning (EOP): The permitting process for mega-projects that block coastal access for locals and negatively affect our nature and monuments.
• Local Economy: Measures to ensure that tourism revenue circulates locally, providing a dignified living for workers and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).

The PNP faction has requested that representatives from the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB), the Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association (CHATA), and the CARMABI Foundation be invited to share their expertise directly with Parliament.
