The House of HOTD is ready for Carnival 2027

WILLEMSTAD — For Carnival 2027, Hats off to Dreams opens the doors to the House of HOTD. The HOUSE of HOTD is an ode the ancestral home of our founder Janis Vinck and to Hilda “Dachi” Vinck-Leañez, the woman who sewed the first costume and set everything in motion.
Fifty-five years ago, Dachi cut and stitched the first costume for Jumping Hats. That costume became a group. That group became a tradition and an inspiration to start Hats off to the Dreams. Hats off to Dreams is now a creative house, built on Dachi’s craft as a seamstress and an artist. But the HOUSE OF HOTD also refers to our values as a group; we treat each other like family, we support one another and we dare to do things differently.
Our promise always stands on two words: tailor-made. In couture, tailor-made means the garment is made to fit the person. Measurements are taken, fabric is cut, and the result belongs to one body and no other. We work that way with cloth, and with people. Every costume is cut and crafted with love for every single member of our house to wear with pride, and every member has a place in a family that grew out of one woman’s dream.
Our costume begins where every costume begins: with the pattern, drafted before the first stitch is made. From there we bring forward the tools of the trade. The needle. The scissors. The thread. The zippers. The safety pins. And at the center, the measuring tape, the instrument that turns a person into a pattern and a pattern into a costume that is theirs alone.
These are the elements that make every carnival costume possible, whatever the theme, whichever group you call home. They usually stay behind the scenes, in the workroom of a seamstress, or between the teeth of the tailors while they work. This year we bring them into the spotlight. The workroom becomes the parade.
The main colors are ivory and black, the colors of the pattern paper and the ink that marks it. Against that foundation, every element is rendered in full color for a look that will be sure to dazzle the streets.
In front of a full crowd at Keizershof this past Saturday September 19, the models put on a show to announce the start of the carnival period. The crowd erupted in surprise and enthusiasm at the reveal.

Hats Off To Dreams Kids return with a playful version of the costume, cut and colored for the energy our children and teens bring to the road. The kids theme is an invitation for all children to honor their dreams: one pin, a thousand dreams. You are the creator of your masterpiece.
The finishing touch is one the whole Caribbean will recognize: the Danish butter cookie tin, the tin that has never once held cookies, the tin that holds the sewing kit in every household on this island. Our kids will carry them as bags. It is the most honest tribute we could make to a seamstress, and it will make every grandmother on the route smile.
