‘Op naar een Caribische kennisagenda’
Wetenschap vraagt mening Caribische bewoners en instellingen
De Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) nodigt inwoners en organisaties van de Caribische eilanden uit om hun vragen aan de wetenschap in te sturen. Hiermee wil NWO een agenda maken die de belangrijkste wetenschappelijke en maatschappelijke kennisvragen benoemt en die richting zal geven aan het onderzoek van de komende jaren.
Is er bijvoorbeeld meer onderzoek nodig naar klimaatverandering of het koraal? Moet er meer kennis komen over de economische ontwikkeling van de eilanden? Welke vragen spelen in het onderwijsveld? Wat zijn de meest prangende vragen op het terrein van voeding en gezondheid?
Met dit initiatief wil NWO het toekomstige onderzoek goed laten aansluiten bij actuele vragen en ontwikkelingen in de Caribische regio. “We kiezen er bewust voor om zowel organisaties als inwoners deze vragen voor te leggen; dat levert een gevarieerd beeld.” Aldus Josef Stuefer, programma-manager Cariben van NWO.
Inwoners en medewerkers van organisaties op Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten en Saba kunnen via de website CaribbeanResearch.nl hun vragen tot 15 september 2019 insturen. De enquête is in drie talen beschikbaar; Nederlands, Engels en Papiaments. Gekoppeld aan ervaringen uit het bestaande NWO-onderzoeksprogramma voor de Cariben en een inventarisatie van lopende kennisprojecten zal dit eind-2019 uitmonden in een kennisagenda voor het Caribisch deel van het Koninkrijk.
Towards a Caribbean research agenda
Science asks the opinion of Caribbean residents and institutions
The Dutch Research Council (NWO) invites residents and organisations from the Caribbean islands of the Kingdom to submit their questions to science. NWO will use this information to draw up an agenda pinpointing the most important scientific and societal knowledge questions that will shape the direction of the research for the coming years.
For example, do we need more research into climate change or coral restoration? Is more knowledge required about the economic development of the islands? Which questions play a role in the field of education? What are the most urgent questions in the areas of nutrition and health?
With this initiative, NWO wants to ensure that future research matches the current challenges and developments in the Caribbean region. ‘We have deliberately decided to submit these questions to both organisations and residents; that will give a diverse picture’, says Josef Stuefer, programme manager Caribbean Research at NWO.
Residents of the islands and employees of organisations on Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten and Saba can submit their questions via the website CaribbeanResearch.nl until 15 September 2019. The survey is available in three languages: Dutch, English and Papiamento. The information obtained will be linked to experiences from the existing NWO programme Caribbean Research and an inventory of current knowledge projects. Towards the end of 2019 this will result in a research agenda for the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
