Bon kabei – good hair – what is it?

A new talkshow in Papiamentu

‘The Spot Curaçao’ produces a talkshow: “bon kabei – good hair”. The first episode will be released on Youtube in September 2024. Host Eunice Goeloe and Jeannine Käser-Lovert will talk about the impact of our past on the relationship we have with our hair. To explore this, they will talk with different community members and experts, who will share their perspective and experience. All conversations will take place in Papiamentu.

Eunice Goeloe, producer and host of “bon kabei” says: “When I was 13 years old my parents straightened my hair for the first time. This affected my self-esteem a lot. Because why was my hair not good the way it was?”

More than just hair

The talkshow treats the topic of hair because it forms an important part of our identity and our perception of beauty. During the different episodes the topics of history, culture, economy, gender dynamics, mental health and self-love will also be discussed.

According to Jeannine Käser, social scientist and host of the show “bon kabei”: “The social context in Curaçao is very interesting to me. My father is Swiss, but through my mother, who is Afro-Curaçaon, I have always had a strong connection with Curaçao. The cultural contrast between the two countries intrigues me.”

Jeannine grew up in Switzerland and Eunice in Otrobanda: “Despite growing up in very different environments, we share the same vision; contributing to paving the path for the next generation to grow up more freely.”
