MLB ORGANIZES SUCCESFUL ‘PLAY BALL’ ACTIVITIES AT DIDI DEEDS FIELD
WILLEMSTAD – Major League Baseball (MLB) recently organized a couple of successful ‘Play Ball’ activities at Didi Deeds Field at Tera Kòrá. Over one hundred kids ages 5 to 12 from the neighborhood of Tera Kòrá and the Bándabou area came together to have a fun filled baseball afternoon. The program was conducted by the full coaching staff of the Curaçao MLB Elite program together with coaches from the Didi Deeds Foundation. ‘Play Ball’ is an MLB initiative, which was launched in 2015 as the largest effort to encourage widespread participation in both formal and casual baseball and softball activities.
The coaching staff began with a brief introduction to the rules of baseball and the importance of fair play. Then the kids were divided into groups and engaged in various stations that included: warm-up physical exercises, batting, catching, and throwing, base running, mini games, and a homerun derby. All the kids received, and had to put on, their ‘Play Ball’ T-shirts prior to the activity and at the end they also received a plastic bat and ball for them to play at home with.
Coach Eduardo de Leon, supervisor of the MLB Elite Development Program here in Curaçao, was very satisfied with the activity and the excited participation of the kids. “We opted to kick off our ‘Play Ball’ events in the area of Bándabou as this area is many times overlooked. Didi Deeds Foundation does a great job in expanding and promoting the game of baseball in Tera Kòrá and Bándabou. We saw already some Didi Gregorius players in the making,” de Leon said. MLB is grateful to the Didi Deeds Foundation, particularly Johnny Gregorius, for generously providing the facilities for these activities. Their support has been invaluable in inviting children with fewer opportunities to engage with and experience the benefits of the ‘Play Ball’ program. It is the intention for MLB to hold more of these ‘Play Ball’ events in other areas of Curaçao in the near future.
