PCN viert feestelijke opening van The Hill Compound op Sint Eustatius
Met een feestelijke opening van The Hill Compound is de voltooiing van een uitgebreide restauratie van
dit monument op Statia door Stichting Pensioenfonds Caribisch Nederland (PCN) een feit. De ceremonie
bracht belanghebbenden, hoogwaardigheidsbekleders en genodigden van de Statiaanse gemeenschap
samen om de heropleving van deze historische plek te vieren.
Met de toespraken van PCN-bestuurslid Roy Hooker, Bharat Bhojwani (Managing Director PMCN) en
Michael Newton (Monumentenexpert, Newton Heritage Consulting) werd teruggekeken op het traject
van aankoop tot nu en de positieve impact. Erfgoedinspecteur van Statia, Richard Richardson,
benadrukte de essentie van het behoud van erfgoed en samenwerking om duurzame en blijvende
veranderingen in het landschap van Statia aan te brengen. De gezaghebber, mevrouw Alida Francis, sloot
de toespraken af door het culturele, sociale en economische belang van het project voor Sint Eustatius
te benadrukken. Met het ceremonieel doorknippen van het lint is The Hill Compound officieel met een
nieuw hoofdstuk begonnen.
The Hill Compound, voorheen bekend als Mr. Lampe’s House en een belangrijk onderdeel van het erfgoed
van het eiland, is zorgvuldig gerestaureerd in de oorspronkelijke architectonische stijl en omgetoverd tot
een complex voor gemengd gebruik met drie wooneenheden en drie commerciële ruimten. De
restauratie werd voltooid onder begeleiding van Newton Heritage Consulting en de
bouwwerkzaamheden werden uitgevoerd door LICCOM Statia B.V., met ondersteuning van de lokale
toezichthouder De Jong Construction N.V. De investering wordt beheerd door de
Participatiemaatschappij Caribisch Nederland (PMCN), een volledige dochteronderneming van PCN.
Gezaghebber Francis sprak haar waardering uit voor de bijdragen van het project door te stellen dat “het
behouden en restaureren van de gebouwen van Statia belangrijk is omdat ze de weerspiegeling zijn van
onze geschiedenis; ze helpen ons Statianen te begrijpen en te respecteren die in verschillende tijdperken
leefden, met verschillende gewoonten en tradities. Met de viering van vandaag worden we er opnieuw
aan herinnerd waarom Statia de Historische Parel van het Caribisch gebied wordt genoemd”.
PCN-bestuurslid Roy Hooker onderstreepte het belang van het project voor de gemeenschap. “Dit
project is een bewijs van PCN’s toewijding om erfgoed te behouden en tegelijkertijd economische en
sociale ontwikkeling te stimuleren”, aldus de heer Hooker. “Persoonlijk ben ik er erg trots op dat The Hill
Compound weer een centrale en functionele rol gaat spelen in Oranjestad en dat PCN zich nu gehuisvest
heeft in één van de commerciële units.”
Mevrouw Marie Rigobert, van Statia, is gecontracteerd als lokale beheerder om ervoor te zorgen dat het
complex een levendige spil wordt voor bewoners, bedrijven en bezoekers in een gastvrije en goed
georganiseerde omgeving. Momenteel zijn er nog twee commerciële units – een winkel en een restaurant

PCN celebrates grand opening of The Hill Compound on Sint Eustatius
The grand opening of The Hill Compound recently marked the completion of an extensive restoration of
this monument on Statia by Stichting Pensioenfonds Caribisch Nederland (PCN). The ceremony brought
together key stakeholders, dignitaries, and community members to celebrate the revitalization of this
historic site.
Speeches by PCN Board Member Roy Hooker, Bharat Bhojwani (Managing Director PMCN), and Michael
Newton (Monument Expert, Newton Heritage Consulting) reflected on the overall journey and the
positive impact. Richard Richardson (Statia’s Heritage Inspector) emphasized the essence of heritage
preservation and collaboration in order to make sustainable and lasting changes to the landscape of
Statia. The Honorable Island Governor, Lady Alida Francis, concluded the speeches by highlighting the
cultural, social and economic importance of the project for Sint Eustatius. The ceremonial ribbon-cutting
officially marked the beginning of a new chapter for this monumental property.
The Hill Compound, formerly known as Mr. Lampe’s House and a significant part of the island’s heritage,
has been carefully restored to its original architectural style and transformed into a mixed-use complex,
with three residential units and three commercial spaces. The restoration was completed under the
guidance of Newton Heritage Consulting and the construction work was carried out by LICCOM Statia
B.V., with support from local supervisor De Jong Construction N.V. The investment is managed by the
Participatiemaatschappij Caribisch Nederland (PMCN), a wholly owned subsidiary of PCN.
Governor Francis expressed her appreciation for the project’s contributions, by stating that “preserving
and restoring the buildings of Statia is important as they are the reflection of our history; they help us
understand and respect Statians who lived in different eras, with different habits and traditions. With
today’s celebrations, we are reminded of why Statia is called the Historical Gem of the Caribbean”.
PCN Board Member Roy Hooker underlined the significance of the project for the community. “This
project is a testament to PCN’s commitment to preserving heritage while fostering economic and social
development,” said Mr. Hooker. “Personally, I am very proud that The Hill Compound once again will play
a central and functional role in Oranjestad and that PCN is occupying one of the commercial units”.
Mrs. Marie Rigobert, from Statia, has been contracted as Property Manager to ensure that the complex
will be a vibrant hub for residents, businesses and visitors in a welcoming and well-organized setting.
Currently, two commercial units – a shop and a restaurant – remain available for lease, offering unique
