Minister of ECYS, Melissa D. Gumbs, was pleased and honoured to open up the Performance Sports Academy’s High School Basketball Tournament last week, one more amazing event focused on promoting athletics and sports participation among our nation’s young people. PSA also took time to recognize five men who have contributed to the development and growth of basketball on the island:
– William “Yorkie” York
– William Barry
– Gordon St. Luce
– Derick Prince
– Robert “Robbie” Pantophlet
Minister Gumbs assisted with distributing the awards and honouring these basketball stalwarts for their continued service and work in coaching, refereeing and promoting the sport on St. Maarten.
The Minister, through the Ministry of ECYS, looks forward to continuing to support initiatives such as PSA and their events, as building discipline, fostering good sportsmanship, professionalizing sports organizations and encouraging goal-oriented athlete development form some of her priorities for this term when it comes to all sports on St. Maarten.
