This year, once again, Curaçao will take part in the global City Nature Challenge event (April 24–27, 2026). In 2025, during our first participation, our small island of Curaçao reached 78th place worldwide in number of observations. This year, we aim to do even better!
To help people be better prepared for the challenge, the organizers of City Nature Challenge Curaçao have planned several events.
Next week, from February 16 to 22, we invite everyone in the community to take part in a fun and important activity: the Curaçao Invasive Species Bioblitz.
Not every plant or animal we see on the island belongs here. Some species arrived through human activity — for example through gardening or as pets — and some of them can spread so quickly that they throw local ecosystems out of balance. On an island like Curaçao, this can have major consequences. We all know the Neem tree and the lionfish!
That’s why we are asking for your help using the iNaturalist app.
For one full week, we ask the community to help observe and record invasive species across Curaçao — in your yard, your neighborhood, along roadsides, and in the sea. Every photo and observation gives scientists more information about what species are present, how serious the problem is, and where action is needed.
On our social media channels, we will share the list of invasive species we want to document, so you’ll know exactly what to look for. Chances are you already recognize some of them!

Why is this important?
Early detection is one of the best tools we have to protect native plants and animals. Your observation can truly make a difference. It’s also excellent preparation for the City Nature Challenge, taking place April 24–27, 2026.
To help you learn more and participate with confidence, we are organizing a series of free masterclasses about Curaçao’s nature — everyone is welcome!
The masterclasses cover topics such as birds, plants, land and marine animals, and coral reefs. The next masterclass takes place on February 19 and focuses on using iNaturalist and a workshop on nature photography.
All masterclasses run from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. The class starts promptly at 7:00 PM and takes place at Hòfi Cas Corá.

Ook dit jaar doet Curaçao opnieuw mee aan het wereldwijde evenement City Nature Challenge (24–27 april 2026). In 2025, tijdens onze eerste deelname, behaalde ons kleine eiland Curaçao plaats 78 wereldwijd wat betreft het aantal waarnemingen. Dit jaar willen we dat resultaat overtreffen!
Om deelnemers beter voor te bereiden op de uitdaging, hebben de organisatoren van City Nature Challenge Curaçao verschillende activiteiten gepland.
Volgende week, van 16 tot en met 22 februari, nodigen we iedereen in de gemeenschap uit om deel te nemen aan een leuke en belangrijke activiteit: de Bioblitz Invasieve Soorten van Curaçao.
Niet elke plant of elk dier dat we op het eiland zien, hoort hier van nature thuis. Sommige soorten zijn door menselijk handelen geïntroduceerd — bijvoorbeeld via tuinen of als huisdieren — en sommige verspreiden zich zo snel dat ze het lokale ecosysteem uit balans brengen. Op een eiland als Curaçao kan dit grote gevolgen hebben. We kennen allemaal de Neemboom en de koraalduivel (lionfish)!
Daarom vragen wij om jullie hulp met behulp van de iNaturalist-app.
Gedurende één week vragen we de gemeenschap om invasieve soorten te observeren en vast te leggen op Curaçao — in tuinen, buurten, langs wegen en in zee. Elke foto en waarneming levert wetenschappers waardevolle informatie op over welke soorten aanwezig zijn, hoe groot het probleem is en waar actie nodig is.
Via onze sociale media delen we de lijst met invasieve soorten die we willen documenteren, zodat je precies weet waar je op moet letten. Grote kans dat je sommige al kent!

Om je te helpen meer te leren en met vertrouwen deel te nemen, organiseren we een reeks gratis masterclasses over de natuur van Curaçao — iedereen is welkom!
De masterclasses behandelen onderwerpen zoals vogels, planten, land- en zeedieren en koraalriffen. De volgende masterclass vindt plaats op 19 februari en gaat over het gebruik van iNaturalist en een workshop natuurfotografie.
Alle masterclasses vinden plaats van 18:30 tot 20:00 uur. De les start precies om 19:00 uur en vindt plaats bij Hòfi Cas Corá.
