Statia Government informs the public that reports have emerged of oil seepage from a landfill site in Antigua. Authorities there have activated a corrective action plan and are working to contain the discharge.
At this time, there is no confirmed impact in Statia waters.
In response to this development, the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) convened an emergency meeting with the Deputy Island Governor and members of the Island Support Team (EBT) to assess potential risks and review preparedness measures. The meeting focused on marine monitoring, public health safeguards, contingency planning and stakeholder coordination.
As a precaution, the Harbour Office, the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard, St. Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA) and the Global Terminal Investments (GTI) have been informed and will continue monitoring coastal waters and harbour areas.
