Akeem Chandler-Prescod wint 3e editie CariCon Poetry Slam
Willemstad, Curaçao – Akeem Chandler-Prescod uit Barbados heeft op zaterdag 21 maart de CariCon Poetry Slam 2026 gewonnen. De jury prees zijn rauwe, eerlijke en persoonlijke gedichten over mannelijkheid, geweld en opvoeding in het Caribisch gebied.
Het literaire evenement vond in samenwerking met Wintertuin Curaçao plaats in Teatro Aula Habaai. De slam werd georganiseerd op Wereldpoëziedag, een dag die door UNESCO is uitgeroepen om stil te staan bij het belang van poëzie binnen de literatuur en het schrijven in bredere zin.
Meer dan 150 liefhebbers van het geschreven en gesproken woord verzamelden zich in Teatro Aula Habaai voor een avond vol emotie en Caribisch talent. Tien deelnemers van acht Caribische eilanden wisten het publiek te raken met performances die harten, hoofden en zielen beroerden.
Naast de wedstrijdoptredens waren er ook bijzondere gastoptredens van Dayra Lee, oprichter van Puerto Rico Poetry Slam, en Britton Wright uit Jamaica, winnaar van de CariCon Poetry Slam 2025.
Zoals V. Steve Russell, managing director van CariCon, het mooi verwoordde:
“The Caribbean is one people.” Met die gedachte blijft de Caribbean Literary, Culture & Heritage Organization (CariCon) bouwen aan verbinding, creativiteit en samenwerking in de regio.
De jury stond voor de moeilijke taak om uit vijf uitzonderlijk sterke finalisten drie winnaars te kiezen. De eerste prijs ging naar Akeem Chandler-Prescod uit Barbados. Kary Rios Santana uit Puerto Rico won de tweede prijs en Keeron Isaac uit Trinidad & Tobago eindigde op de derde plaats. De top vijf werd verder aangevuld door Aline Abdul uit Curaçao en Sergio Hernandez uit Puerto Rico.
De jury beoordeelde de deelnemers op onder meer inhoud, performance en reactie van het publiek. Binnen die beoordeling woog de inhoud van de gedichten zwaar mee, waaronder hoe sterk de dichters aansloten bij het festivalthema ‘Speak truth, speak life’ (spreek de waarheid, spreek leven).
Volgens de jury onderscheidde winnaar Akeem Chandler-Prescod zich vooral door de combinatie van inhoud en performance. Hij behaalde de meeste punten, met name vanwege zijn sterke en foutloze voordrachten. Met zijn lichaamstaal en spel wist hij het publiek moeiteloos mee te nemen, ook op momenten waarop de thematiek complex of zwaar was, zelfs voor luisteraars die het Engels niet volledig machtig waren. Juist zijn compromisloze eerlijkheid en krachtige performance maakten hem tot de overtuigende winnaar van deze derde editie.
Hij ging ervandoor met de CariCon Trophy, een geldprijs van $1500, een 3-daagse all-inclusive vakantie in de Dominicaanse Republiek, een optreden tijdens de volgende CariCon Conference 2026 in Toronto, een publicatiedeal met Brer Anancy Press en een VIP-ervaring voor de CariCon Poetry Slam 2027 in Guadeloupe, inclusief reis en verblijf.
De tweede prijs bestaat uit een geldprijs van $750, de CariCon Poetry Slam Medal en een beurs voor de CariCon Writers Retreat in oktober 2026 in Martinique.

Akeem Chandler-Prescod Wins 3rd Edition CariCon Poetry Slam
Willemstad, Curaçao – Akeem Chandler-Prescod from Barbados won the CariCon Poetry Slam 2026 on Saturday, March 21. The jury praised his raw, honest, and personal poems about masculinity, violence, and upbringing in the Caribbean.
The literary event took place in collaboration with Wintertuin Curaçao at Teatro Aula Habaai. The slam was organized on World Poetry Day, a day proclaimed by UNESCO to reflect on the importance of poetry within literature and writing in a broader sense.
More than 150 lovers of the written and spoken word gathered at Teatro Aula Habaai for an evening full of emotion and Caribbean talent. Ten participants from eight Caribbean islands managed to move the audience with performances that touched hearts, minds, and souls. In addition to the competition performances, there were also special guest appearances by Dayra Lee, founder of Puerto Rico Poetry Slam, and Britton Wright from Jamaica, winner of the CariCon Poetry Slam 2025.
As Steve Russell, managing director of CariCon, put it beautifully:“The Caribbean is one people.” With that thought in mind, the Caribbean Literary, Culture & Heritage Organization (CariCon) continues to build connection, creativity, and collaboration in the region.
The jury faced the difficult task of selecting three winners from five exceptionally strong finalists. The first prize went to Akeem Chandler-Prescod from Barbados. Kary Rios Santana from Puerto Rico won the second prize, and Keeron Isaac from Trinidad & Tobago finished in third place. The top five was further completed by Aline Abdul from Curaçao and Sergio Hernandez from Puerto Rico.
The jury judged the participants on content, performance, and audience reaction, among other criteria. Within that assessment, the content of the poems carried significant weight, including how strongly the poets aligned with the festival theme ‘Speak truth, speak life’.
According to the jury, winner Akeem Chandler-Prescod distinguished himself primarily through the combination of content and performance. He received the most points, particularly due to his strong and flawless recitations. With his body language and acting, he effortlessly captivated the audience, even at moments when the themes were complex or heavy, and even for listeners who were not fully proficient in English. It was precisely his uncompromising honesty and powerful performance that made him the convincing winner of this third edition.
He walked away with the CariCon Trophy, a cash prize of $1,500, a 3-day all-inclusive vacation in the Dominican Republic, a performance at the next CariCon Conference 2026 in Toronto, a publishing deal with Brer Anancy Press, and a VIP experience for the CariCon Poetry Slam 2027 in Guadeloupe, including travel and accommodation. The second prize consists of a cash prize of $750, the CariCon Poetry Slam Medal, and a scholarship for the CariCon Writers Retreat in October 2026 in Martinique.
The third prize consists of a cash prize of $500, the CariCon Poetry Slam Medal, and a scholarship for the CariCon Conference in June 2026.
