Curaçao doet weer mee aan ‘s werelds grootste natuurwedstrijd — en dit jaar gaan we beter voorbereid van start
WILLEMSTAD, Curaçao — Stel je voor: je stapt op een zaterdagochtend je tuin in, maakt een foto van een vlinder, en draagt daarmee bij aan wereldwijd wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Dat is de City Nature Challenge — en op 24 april begint het weer op Curaçao.
Want in april doen meer dan 100.000 mensen in 62 landen mee aan één van de grootste wetenschappelijke evenementen ter wereld. Vorig jaar deed Curaçao voor het allereerste keer mee — en eindigde op plek #79 wereldwijd, uit bijna 700 deelnemende steden en regio’s.
Van 24 tot en met 27 april 2026 doet Curaçao voor de tweede keer mee.
De natuur van Curaçao staat onder druk

Curaçao herbergt een unieke combinatie van soorten die je nergens anders ter wereld vindt. Het eiland telt meer dan 500 plantensoorten, meer dan 65 soorten harde koralen, honderden vissoorten, zo’n 200 tot 265 vogelsoorten en minstens 9 inheemse reptielensoorten — waaronder leguanen, slangen en zeeschildpadden. Maar die natuur staat onder toenemende druk. Wetenschappelijke data over wat er precies waar groeit en leeft is schaars — en zonder die data is gerichte bescherming nauwelijks mogelijk.
De data die tijdens de City Nature Challenge wordt verzameld, verdwijnt niet in een la. Het Ministerie van Gezondheid, Milieu en Natuur (GMN) gebruikt de waarnemingen actief om invasieve soorten te documenteren en beheerplannen op te stellen. Elke foto die jij uploadt draagt direct bij aan het natuurbeheer van ons eiland.
Wat is de City Nature Challenge?
De City Nature Challenge is een jaarlijks, wereldwijd wetenschappelijk evenement van vier dagen, georganiseerd door de California Academy of Sciences en het Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Deelnemers fotograferen wilde planten en dieren in hun omgeving en uploaden die via de gratis app iNaturalist. Elke foto telt als een wetenschappelijke waarneming, geverifieerd door biologen en experts wereldwijd.
Steden dingen mee in drie categorieën: de meeste waarnemingen, de meeste soorten, en de meeste deelnemers. Maar het gaat verder dan competitie: de verzamelde data vormt echte wetenschappelijke informatie die onderzoekers en beleidsmakers helpt bij het beschermen van biodiversiteit.
Gestart in 2016 als een vriendschappelijke wedstrijd tussen Los Angeles en San Francisco, groeide het evenement uit tot een wereldwijd fenomeen. In 2025 deden ruim 103.000 mensen in 669 steden in 62 landen mee, met in totaal meer dan 3,3 miljoen waarnemingen van bijna 75.000 soorten — waaronder meer dan 3.500 zeldzame of bedreigde soorten.
Curaçao in 2025: een debuut dat boven alle verwachtingen uitsteeg

In april 2025 deed Curaçao voor het allereerste keer mee — het resultaat overtrof alle verwachtingen.
In slechts vier dagen legden 211 deelnemers maar liefst 11.200 waarnemingen vast van 1.203 soorten, verspreid over het hele eiland — van de kust tot Klein Curaçao. Dat is gemiddeld 50 waarnemingen per deelnemer. Van alle waarnemingen was 64% van wetenschappelijke kwaliteit (research grade), wat betekent dat de data direct bruikbaar zijn voor onderzoek en beleid.
Wat het resultaat van Curaçao nog indrukwekkender maakt, is wie er allemaal aan meedeed. Dertien organisaties organiseerden hun eigen bioblitz en namen als groep deel:

De sociale mediacampagne — met 13 korte documentaires over Curaçaose natuurpioniers — bereikte meer dan 200.000 kijkers. En in oktober 2025 ontving CNC Curaçao de prestigieuze Curaçao Innovation Award for Sustainability van CITI.
Je hoeft geen bioloog te zijn — en je hoeft er niet vier dagen voor vrij te nemen
Dat is misschien wel de belangrijkste boodschap: meedoen is makkelijker dan je denkt. Dertig minuten op één van de vier dagen is al genoeg. Je hoeft de soort niet eens te herkennen — de app helpt je daarbij, en de wereldwijde iNaturalist-community identificeert jouw vondsten voor je.
En het is veel leuker om het samen te doen. De City Nature Challenge is een perfecte gelegenheid voor een teamuitje met collega’s, een schoolreisje, of een middag met het gezin. Je kunt zelfs gewoon op het schoolplein beginnen — je zult versteld staan van wat er leeft tussen de tegels.
Ga goed voorbereid van start: gratis masterclasses en bioblitzes

Om inwoners klaar te stomen, organiseert het CNC-team dit jaar een volledig seizoen aan gratis masterclasses en bioblitzes — voor iedereen, zonder voorkennis vereist.
De Curaçao Nature Masterclass Series loopt van 27 januari t/m 18 april en behandelt onderwerpen als insecten, vogelspotten, koraalriffen, planten, vissen en citizen science. Alle sessies vinden plaats bij Hòfi Cas Còrá, van 18:30 tot 20:00 uur.
Twee oefenbioblitzes bieden praktijkervaring in het veld vóór het grote weekend:
- Hòfi Cas Còrá Bioblitz — 18 april, 9:00–15:00 uur
- Kaya Kaya & Earth Day Bioblitz — 22 april, 17:30–19:00 uur bij Kaya Kaya Hub, Otrobanda

Curaçao returns to the world’s largest nature competition — better prepared than ever
WILLEMSTAD, Curaçao — Imagine stepping into your garden on a Saturday morning, photographing a butterfly, and contributing to scientific research around the world. That’s the City Nature Challenge — and on April 24th, it returns to Curaçao.
Every April, more than 100,000 people across 62 countries take part in one of the largest scientific events in the world. Last year, Curaçao joined for the very first time — and ranked #79 worldwide, out of nearly 700 cities and regions.
From April 24 to 27, 2026, Curaçao participates for the second time.
Curaçao’s nature is under threat

Curaçao is home to a unique combination of species found nowhere else in the world. The island hosts more than 500 plant species, more than 65 species of hard coral, hundreds of fish species, around 200 to 265 bird species, and at least 9 native reptile species — including iguanas, snakes and sea turtles. But this nature is under growing pressure. Scientific data on exactly what grows and lives where is scarce — and without that data, targeted conservation is nearly impossible.
The data collected during the City Nature Challenge doesn’t gather dust on a shelf. The Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN) actively uses the observations to document invasive species and develop management plans. Every photo you upload contributes directly to the conservation of our island.
What is the City Nature Challenge?
The City Nature Challenge is an annual, global, four-day scientific event organised by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Participants photograph wild plants and animals in their surroundings and upload them via the free iNaturalist app. Every photo counts as a scientific observation, verified by biologists and experts worldwide.
Cities compete in three categories: most observations, most species, and most participants. But it goes beyond competition: the data collected forms real scientific information that helps researchers and policymakers protect biodiversity.
Started in 2016 as a friendly rivalry between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the event has grown into a global phenomenon. In 2025, more than 103,000 people in 669 cities across 62 countries participated, recording more than 3.3 million observations of nearly 75,000 species — including more than 3,500 rare or endangered species.
Curaçao in 2025: a debut that exceeded all expectations

In April 2025, Curaçao joined for the very first time — and the results exceeded all expectations.
In just four days, 211 participants recorded no fewer than 11,200 observations of 1,203 species, spread across the entire island — from the coastline to Klein Curaçao. That is an average of 50 observations per participant. Of all observations, 64% were of research grade, meaning the data can be directly used for research and policy.
What makes the result even more impressive is who took part. Thirteen organisations ran their own bioblitzes and participated as a group:

The social media campaign — featuring 13 short documentaries about Curaçaoan nature pioneers — reached more than 200,000 viewers. And in October 2025, CNC Curaçao received the prestigious Curaçao Innovation Award for Sustainability from CITI.
You don’t need to be a biologist — and you don’t need to take four days off
That is perhaps the most important message: joining in is easier than you think. Thirty minutes on just one of the four days is enough. You don’t even need to identify the species — the app helps you, and the global iNaturalist community will identify your finds for you.
And it’s much more fun to do it together. The City Nature Challenge is a perfect opportunity for a team outing with colleagues, a school trip, or an afternoon with the family. You can even start right on the schoolyard — you’ll be amazed at what lives between the pavement.
Free masterclasses and bioblitzes

To get residents ready, the CNC team is organising a full season of free masterclasses and bioblitzes this year — for everyone, no prior knowledge required.
The Curaçao Nature Masterclass Series runs from January 27th to April 18th and covers topics including insects, birdwatching, coral reefs, plants, fish and citizen science. All sessions are held at Hòfi Cas Còrá, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
Two practice bioblitzes offer hands-on field experience before the big long weekend:
- Hòfi Cas Còrá Bioblitz — April 18th, 9:00 AM–3:00 PM
- Kaya Kaya & Earth Day Bioblitz — April 22nd, 5:30–7:00 PM at Kaya Kaya Hub, Otrobanda
All activities are free and open to everyone.
