Delivering a heartfelt and open address, Island Governor Levenstone expressed his sincere appreciation to everyone in attendance for their warm welcome, continued support, and for taking the time to gather for such a meaningful occasion. He reflected on Saba’s enduring culture of togetherness, emphasizing that no matter where Sabans reside, they remain united by a shared sense of community, heritage, and commitment to one another. He added that events such as these demonstrate the strength of those connections and the close-knit nature of the Saban community.

The Island Governor also reflected on his early years living on Saba and spoke about the significant role the Saban community in Sint Maarten played in shaping his journey after he relocated to the island. He shared how the guidance, encouragement, and support he received from fellow Sabans helped mold him into the person he is today. He also expressed pride in the many Sabans who have established themselves on Sint Maarten, noting that through hard work, dedication, and perseverance, many have risen to managerial and leadership roles across a wide range of organizations, serving as an inspiration to himself and future generations.

Speaking on his appointment as Island Governor, Governor Levenstone described the opportunity to serve as his calling. He took a moment to thank those who had supported, encouraged, and stood beside him every step of the way, from the beginning of his journey to his appointment as Island Governor, acknowledging their encouragement, belief, and support throughout the process.

“Community is at the heart of Saba, whether on Saba or abroad,” said Island Governor Jocelyn Levenstone. “Events like this provide an opportunity to reconnect, celebrate our achievements, and create continued collaboration for the benefit of all Sabans. Whether our people live on Saba or in Sint Maarten, we remain one community, united by our shared history, culture, and commitment to our island and one another.”

During his remarks, the Island Governor made a heartfelt appeal to members of the Saban community living in Sint Maarten to consider returning home, emphasizing that Saba needs their skills, experience, and contributions to help build a stronger future for the island.

The Governor also took the opportunity to recognize several individuals for their longstanding contributions and commitment to the Saban community. Among those honored were Mr. Allen Busby and Ms. Loretta Richardson, who were recognized as two of the oldest Sabans in attendance. Speaking about Mr. Busby, the Governor noted that although he is “a man of few words,” his support, advice, and presence have always been greatly appreciated. Both were celebrated as pillars of the Saban community on Sint Maarten, in recognition of their enduring service, lasting contributions, and the legacy they continue to uphold. Island Governor Levenstone further expressed his gratitude to Wayne Johnson, Jane Johnson, and Antonia “Tona” Wilson for helping to organize the gathering, and thanked them for their friendship and for always being there for the Saban community. He also recognized Donovan Smith as the youngest professional with a Saban background currently living in Sint Maarten, setting him as an example of the next generation of Sabans whose knowledge, talent, and leadership will play an important role in the island’s future. Also in attendance were Mr. Wycliffe Smith, Saba’s first Lieutenant Governor, and Mr. Eddie Johnson, the designer of the Saba flag.

Concluding his address, the Island Governor renewed his call for Sabans living abroad to remain engaged with their island and to work together in encouraging more Sabans to return home, invest in Saba’s future, and help shape the next chapter of the island’s development.

To close the event, Mr. Wayne Johnson invited everyone in attendance to stand and join Ms. Ramona Riley in singing the Saba Anthem.

Following the formal program, attendees enjoyed refreshments, with snacks provided by YDEN Catering, owned by Saban Yolanda Pond-Codrington, who currently resides in Sint Maarten.

The Government of Saba recognizes and values the invaluable contributions of Sabans living in Sint Maarten and remains committed to maintaining meaningful engagement with its community beyond the island’s shores. The Public Entity also extends its appreciation to the Sabans residing in Sint Maarten for their warm participation and continued support.
