Stanley Clementina Brings the Timeless Legacy of Anansi to the Stage in a Unique Musical Experience
WILLEMSTAD – Renowned musician, composer, and cultural producer Stanley Clementina presents Anansi, an original musical production celebrating one of the most enduring cultural connections between Africa, Curaçao, and the wider African diaspora.
Inspired by a cultural heritage research trip to Ghana, Clementina explored the origins of the legendary Anansi spider stories, tracing them to Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Kingdom. These stories, rich with symbolism and wisdom, survived the transatlantic slave trade and continue to thrive across the African diaspora, from Ananse in Ghana to Kompa Nanzi in Curaçao. Across the diaspora, Anansi the cunning spider appears under many names like, Anancy in Jamaica, Ba Anansi in Suriname, Kompa Nanzi in Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire, and even Aunt Nancy in parts of the United States. Though the names vary, the stories continue to connect generations and cultures through shared wisdom, humor, and resilience.
Their remarkable survival is a testament to the resilience of African heritage and the responsibility of each generation to preserve it. “The stories of our ancestors have remained in our cultural DNA across the diaspora,” says Clementina. “It is now our responsibility to keep this heritage alive. This production is my contribution to ensuring these stories continue to inspire future generations.”
The production combines storytelling, music, and theatre, featuring original songs composed by Clementina alongside stories from Curaçao and other parts of the African diaspora. More than entertainment, Anansi is a celebration of identity, history, and cultural continuity. The evening features performances by acclaimed guest artists Mama Elia Isenia, Cici Isenia, Remses Rafaela, Lady Su, and Marvin Snijders. Storyteller Crisen Schorea serves as the evening’s Griot, guiding audiences through the rich tradition of Anansi tales. Reflecting Clementina’s commitment to nurturing young talent, the production will also introduce emerging performer Jordyn Devid in a special surprise appearance.
The preshow with performances from several talented up and coming artists starts at 7 PM, setting the tone for the evening. The Anansi performances will begin promptly at 8 PM and continue until 9:45 PM. Following the performances, the celebration continues with an opportunity to network and socialize while enjoying more live music. Stanley Clementina will close the evening with a special performance featuring a selection of his songs, including the live presentation of his new single.
