Statia Participates in Regional Renewable Energy Workshop in St. Kitts
Statia was represented by Deputy Island Secretary Nikima Hickinson and Senior Policy Advisor for Economy, Nature and Infrastructure (ENI) Maldwyn Timber, who attended at the invitation of Greening the Islands Foundation (GTI) Chairman Gianni Chianetta and the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The workshop provided an opportunity for Statia to share experiences from its own renewable energy development, including the integration of solar power and battery storage into the island’s electricity network.
Discussions covered grid stability, battery storage capacity and regulatory requirements, as well as challenges facing Caribbean islands in reducing their dependence on fossil fuels while maintaining a reliable electricity supply.
The two-day workshop, held at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, brought together government officials, energy experts and regional partners to review preliminary findings of St. Kitts and Nevis’ 100% Renewable Energy Transition Roadmap.
The workshop was convened by the host Ministry in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), through the European Union-funded EUROCLIMA programme, and GTI. Participants examined proposals involving solar energy, battery storage, improvements to electricity networks and the potential development of geothermal energy.
Statia Government’s participation reflects its commitment to regional cooperation and the exchange of practical knowledge, recognising that the experiences of individual islands can help address shared energy challenges across the Caribbean.
