INSELAIR PREPARES FOR THE FUTURE
Willemstad – Curacao. Due to changing market conditions InselAir is forced to make some organizational and operational changes in order to adapt to the new market parameters. These changes are necessary to remain a healthy organization and to fulfil its pivotal role as important contributor to; the economy of Curacao in general, bringing hundreds of thousands tourist yearly to the ABC-islands, as provider of hundreds of direct and thousands of indirect jobs and as main carrier between the islands within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. With the initiatives, which are elaborated below, InselAir has faith and confidence in the future of its organization and its ability to remain one of the largest employers on Curacao.
Compensating for Venezuelan marked reduction In recent months InselAir has successfully compensated, to a large extent, the decrease of the Venezuelan part of its operations (from 35% to 4%) by adding new routes and destinations to its network, such as Port-of-Spain, Barranquilla, Georgetown, Manaus, Havana, San Juan and Quito. In addition, InselAir has increased frequencies to and from Paramaribo, Port-au-Prince and Santo Domingo. “It turns out to be very challenging to compensate this loss completely and we realize that we will need to accept this and restructure our organization around this ‘new reality’’, says Albert Kluijver, CEO of InselAir. “For the part of our operations that we were unable to compensate we will have to reduce our costs. For that reason we have been carefully looking into all aspects of our business including financial, operational, commercial, general affairs and maintenance in order to realize the costs reduction required to compensate for particular that part. Another important initiative is to scale down our flight operations based on the new expected traffic from our revised route network”, according to Kluijver.
What does this mean? Reducing the operational activities means that InselAir will also need to reduce its costs and the amount of employees that was needed in the previous operational situation. Essentially, a smaller operation will be managed by a smaller group of employees. Therefore, InselAir will be re-organizing our workforce by (1) combining positions, (2) eliminating departments and/or (3) re-allocating employees. Employees that are not able to be guaranteed a position within the new company structured will unfortunately be laid-off. This group will be granted full support to find a new position at another organization.
2017 outlook Although very regretfully, the abovementioned steps are critical to ensure InselAir’s position in the Pan-American skies and to create a stable, financially healthy and solid organization for all its stakeholders, including our dedicated employees that remain at the organization, which is ready for the future. Due to recent implemented actions and measures InselAir is already seeing an improvement of the on-time performance from 60% to 72% and strives to get it back to 85% within the foreseeable future. With regards to the traffic from South-America to the Caribbean, InselAir will remain the 3rd largest carrier in the region, serving 22 destinations and 140 routes with a current fleet of 14 aircraft. Also, from 2017 onwards, InselAir will also be renewing its fleet of MD and Fokker type of aircraft.

Als gevolg van veranderende marktomstandigheden is InselAir genoodzaakt om een aantal organisatorische en operationele veranderingen door te voeren om zodoende zich aan te passen aan deze nieuwe marktomstandigheden. Deze wijzigingen zijn noodzakelijk om een gezonde organisatie te blijven en de centrale rol te blijven vervullen in termen van; bijdrage aan de economie van Curaçao in het algemeen, waardoor honderdduizenden toeristen per jaar naar de ABC-eilanden komen, als verstrekker van honderden directe en duizenden indirecte banen en als belangrijkste luchtvaartmaatschappij tussen de eilanden binnen het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. Met de initiatieven, die hieronder worden toegelicht, heeft InselAir geloof en vertrouwen in de toekomst van de organisatie en haar vermogen om één van de grootste werkgevers op Curacao te blijven.
Compenseren voor wegvallen groot deel Venezolaanse markt In de afgelopen maanden heeft InselAir met succes, voor een groot deel de daling van het Venezolaanse deel van haar activiteiten (van 35% naar 4%) gecompenseerd door het toevoegen van nieuwe routes en bestemmingen aan haar netwerk, zoals Port-ofSpain, Barranquilla, Georgetown, Manaus, Havana, San Juan en Quito. Daarnaast heeft InselAir frequenties verhoogd van en naar Paramaribo, Port-au-Prince en Santo Domingo. “Het blijkt erg moeilijk om dit verlies volledig te compenseren en we beseffen dat we deze ‘nieuwe realiteit’ moeten accepteren en onze organisatie rond deze ‘nieuwe realiteit’ dienen te herstructureren’, zegt Albert Kluijver, CEO van InselAir. “Voor het deel van onze activiteiten waarvan we niet in staat zijn om te compenseren zullen wij onze kosten moeten verlagen. Om die reden hebben we zorgvuldig gekeken naar alle aspecten van ons bedrijf, waaronder financiëel, operationeel, commerciëel, algemene zaken en onderhoud om de kosten te verlagen. Een ander belangrijk initiatief is om onze operatie af te stemmen op basis van het verwachtte verkeer binnen ons herziene routenetwerk “, aldus Kluijver.
Wat betekent dit? Het verminderen van de operationele activiteiten betekent dat InselAir ook de kosten én het aantal werknemers wat nodig was in de vorige bedrijfssituatie dient te verminderen. In feite zal een kleinere operatie geleid worden tot een kleinere groep werknemers. Daarom zal InselAir haar personeelsbestand reorganiseren door (1) het combineren van posities, (2) het elimineren van afdelingen en/of (3) het alloceren van medewerkers. Werknemers die niet in aanmerking komen voor een positie binnen de nieuwe organisatiestructuur zullen helaas worden ontslagen. Aan deze groep zal
volledige steun worden verleend door Human Resources, ook voor wat betreft het vinden van een nieuwe functie bij een andere organisatie.
2017 outlook Hoewel zeer betreurenswaardig, de bovengenoemde stappen zijn van cruciaal belang om de positie van InselAir in het Pan-Amerikaanse luchtruim te waarborgen en om een stabiele, financieel gezonde en solide organisatie te creëren voor alle belanghebbenden, waaronder de toegewijde medewerkers die in de organisatie werkzaam blijven. Als gevolg van enkele recent uitgevoerde acties en maatregelen ziet InselAir al een verbetering van de on-time performance van 60% naar 72% en streeft InselAir ernaar om dit binnen afzienbare tijd verder te verhogen naar 85%. Met betrekking tot het verkeer van Zuid-Amerika naar het Caribisch gebied zal InselAir de 3e grootste luchtvaartmaatschappij blijven in de regio, met 22 bestemmingen, 140 routes en met een huidige vloot van 14 vliegtuigen. Beginnend in 2017 zal InselAir ook beginnen haar vloot van MD’s en Fokkers te vernieuwen.
