News bulletin 31st of may actual situation effect oil spill
Since the weekend a work team consisting of the government, Stinapa and Selibon are cleaning the beaches affected by the oil spill that originated in Trinidad.
The government of Bonaire together with Stinapa has been monitoring all the beaches and there has been no report of affected beaches on the west side of the island. These beaches can be visited for leisure activities if desired. There are no warnings for swimming, snorkeling or diving at the beaches on the west side.
The affected beaches Lac, Sorobon, Lagun and Washinkemba are mainly clean. Volunteers are cleaning up the beaches on the daily basis. At this moment it has been reported by Stinapa that only very small tar balls are washing up on shore. A big clean up is planned for Saturday, 3rd of June for the south east coast. Volunteers can register at volunteers@stinapa.org
The water at the affected beaches such as Lac and Sorobon is not toxic. However parents must be alert and avoid children to play with the tar balls. If you see any tar balls in the water, do not touch these tar balls with your bare hands or feet. Please inform the authorities of the matter. If you are in contact with the tar please take it off by using baby oil or vegetable oil. The tar is not necessarily hazardous to the skin but some people may get an allergic reaction due to the substance. In this case it is recommended to contact a physician.
As far as we know there is no major health risk in consuming fish. Do not catch or consume fish that is visibly affected by the tar. Do not eat fish that has a peculiar or weird smell.
If you detect this tar on the sand, the sea or sea an animal covered with this, please inform the authorities or Stinapa through the number +599 717 8444.
