Arrival of first barge with heavy rock from St. Kitts

Today marks a new milestone for the Black Rocks Harbor (BRH) project with the arrival of the first barge with armour rock from St. Kitts.

This morning at 8:30 a.m., the flat barge landed at the temporary load out facility at the BRH site. The barge is loaded with larger size of rock dedicated as armour for the breakwater. Whilst the core of the breakwater is constructed with smaller size rock from Saba, this larger rock functions as the middle filter- or armour layer. This large size rock is not available in large quantities at Saba, hence why it is being transported from St. Kitts. At a next stage, the 35 tons concrete x-blocs will be placed as the outer armour layer.

With rock from St. Kitts and x-blocs from Statia, the project display good examples of inter-island cooperation for these types of large-scale infrastructure projects.

Works will continue in the coming months, taking into account potential suspension of activities to safeguard people and equipment during the hurricane season.

Note: Open House at the project site – Saturday afternoon 20th of June, 2:00 p.m.
