Island leaders praise nearly two decades of exemplary service and regional partnership
(ORANJESTAD, St Eustatius (Statia) – Island Governor Alida Francis, Commissioner Rechelline Leerdam, and Island Council Members Mercedes Lopes-Spanner and Raquel Spanner-Carty arrived in Saba to attend the official farewell ceremony for Island Governor Jonathan Johnson, honouring his incredible 18 years of dedicated service to the island. They were joined by fellow Island Council Members Clyde van Putten, Derrick Simmons, and Glenville Schmidt, who arrived yesterday to take part in the historic proceedings.
The arrival of the Statia delegation underscores the deep-rooted ties and mutual respect between the sister islands, as regional leaders gather to mark the conclusion of Governor Johnson’s historic tenure.
“Let us as a Dutch Kingdom celebrate Governor Johnson’s exemplary leadership, which safeguarded the well-being of his island and all its residents and inspired hope in uncertain times,” stated Island Governor Alida Francis. “Thank you, Governor Johnson, for nearly two decades of exemplary leadership and partnership within our islands.”
Governor Johnson has served as the Island Governor of Saba since 2008, guiding the community through significant constitutional changes and pivotal moments in the region’s recent history. His long-standing commitment to public service has earned him widespread acclaim across the Caribbean Netherlands.
In alignment with the spirit of the farewell proceedings, regional representatives highlighted the enduring impact of his administrative legacy and community-focused leadership.
“His work is a shining example of effective governance and community spirit. After serving his community in the capacity of Island Governor these past 18 years, it is only fitting that he is recognised and celebrated for his invaluable contributions,” noted Commissioner Rechelline Leerdam.
“After 18 years of dedicated service as Island Governor, your tenure comes to an end, but your legacy will remain for years to come. You have served with commitment, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility to your island and its people. As you embark on a new chapter, we extend our heartfelt thanks to you and your family and wish you good health, happiness, and continued success in all your future endeavours. On behalf of the community of Statia, thank you for 18 years of collaboration as sister islands. May you have God’s guidance as you embark on this new chapter,” noted Mercedes Lopes-Spanner & Raquel Spanner-Carty, Island Council Members.
The official farewell ceremony will bring together dignitaries, residents, and officials from across the Dutch Kingdom to celebrate Governor Johnson’s contributions and offer best wishes for his future endeavours.
