Curaçao officieel aangewezen als gastland van de 21e Islands of the World Conference
Shinan, Zuid-Korea / Willemstad, Curaçao – 10 juli 2026 – Curaçao is officieel aangewezen als gastlocatie voor de volgende internationale conferentie van de International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA): de 21e Islands of the World Conference. Tijdens de algemene ledenvergadering van ISISA op 9 juli in Shinan, Zuid-Korea, werd formeel bevestigd dat de conferentie van 2027 op Curaçao zal plaatsvinden.
De conferentie vindt plaats van 6 tot en met 11 juni 2027 en zal naar verwachting ongeveer 200 wetenschappers, onderzoekers en professionals uit circa 40 eilanden wereldwijd samenbrengen.
Curaçao wordt deze week tijdens ISISA 2026 in Zuid-Korea vertegenwoordigd door dr. Renske Pin, Chair van het organisatiecomité van de conferentie van 2027, Elton Villarreal van NAAM en Guido Rojer van MEO. Samen met Steffen van Heijningen, Co-Chair van het organisatiecomité, leidt Pin de voorbereiding en organisatie van de 21e Islands of the World Conference op Curaçao. Tijdens de conferentie in Zuid-Korea zijn de eerste plannen voor Curaçao gepresenteerd aan de internationale ISISA-gemeenschap. Op 10 juli vindt tevens de officiële overdracht van de ISISA-vlag aan Curaçao plaats als volgende gastlocatie.
“Het is bijzonder om Curaçao hier in Zuid-Korea te mogen vertegenwoordigen en te merken hoeveel enthousiasme er internationaal is over de komst van de conferentie naar het Caribisch gebied,” aldus Renske Pin. “We willen in 2027 niet alleen een sterke internationale wetenschappelijke conferentie organiseren, maar ook laten zien hoeveel kennis, onderzoek en expertise er op Curaçao en in de bredere Caribische regio aanwezig is.”
Eilanden als bron van kennis en oplossingen
ISISA is een internationaal netwerk van wetenschappers, onderzoekers en professionals dat zich richt op island studies: onderzoek naar eilanden, eilandgemeenschappen en de specifieke uitdagingen waarmee zij te maken hebben.
Tijdens de 21e Islands of the World Conference op Curaçao staan thema’s als duurzaamheid, klimaatverandering, economie, cultuur, bestuur, gezondheid en de veerkracht van eilandgemeenschappen centraal.
Het thema van de conferentie is “Navigating Challenges, Building Global Resilience: Island Solutions”. De centrale gedachte is dat eilanden niet alleen plekken zijn die met uitdagingen worden geconfronteerd. Het zijn ook plekken waar kennis, ervaring en oplossingen worden ontwikkeld die van waarde kunnen zijn voor andere delen van de wereld.
De wetenschappelijke voorbereiding van de conferentie wordt ondersteund door lokale partners van de University of Curaçao, University of Aruba, University of St. Martin, CARMABI, NAAM en het Ministerie van Economische Ontwikkeling van Curaçao. Daarnaast zullen internationale onderzoekers en leden van het bredere ISISA-netwerk bijdragen aan het wetenschappelijke programma.
Voorbereidingen op Curaçao al in volle gang
De voorbereidingen voor de conferentie van 2027 zijn inmiddels in volle gang. De conferentiewebsite is live, de organisatie heeft belangrijke financiering en sponsoring weten te verkrijgen en de conferentielocatie, Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort, is vastgelegd.
Ook wordt gewerkt aan een sociaal en cultureel programma waarmee internationale bezoekers Curaçao kunnen ervaren en meer inzicht kunnen krijgen in de bredere Caribische context.
Naast het wetenschappelijke programma wil de organisatie ruimte creëren voor studenten, jonge onderzoekers en lokale kennisinstellingen om actief deel te nemen aan de conferentie.
“Dit is een belangrijke kans voor Curaçao,” aldus Pin. “We brengen een internationaal wetenschappelijk netwerk naar ons eiland en geven tegelijkertijd onze eigen onderzoekers, instellingen en expertise een internationaal podium.”
De komende maanden wordt verder gewerkt aan het wetenschappelijke programma, de Scientific Committee en de volgende fase van de voorbereidingen. De call for abstracts opent in 2026.

Curaçao officially named host of the 21st Islands of the World Conference
Shinan, South Korea / Willemstad, Curaçao – 10 July 2026 – Curaçao has officially been designated as the host of the next international conference of the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA): the 21st Islands of the World Conference. During the ISISA General Meeting on 9 July in Shinan, South Korea, it was formally confirmed that the 2027 conference will take place in Curaçao.
The conference will be held from 6 to 11 June 2027 and is expected to attract approximately 200 scholars, researchers and professionals from around 40 islands worldwide.
During ISISA 2026 in South Korea, Curaçao is represented by Dr. Renske Pin, Chair of the 2027 conference Organising Committee, Elton Villarreal of NAAM, and Guido Rojer from MEO. Together with Steffen van Heijningen, Co-Chair of the Organising Committee, Pin is leading the preparation and organisation of the 21st Islands of the World Conference in Curaçao. During the conference in South Korea, the first plans for Curaçao have been presented to the international ISISA community. On 10 July, the official handover of the ISISA flag to Curaçao also takes place, marking Curaçao as the next host of the conference.
“It is an honour to represent Curaçao here in South Korea and to see the enthusiasm within the international community about the conference coming to the Caribbean,” said Renske Pin. “In 2027, we want to organise a strong international scientific conference, but we also want to show the world how much knowledge, research and expertise is present in Curaçao and across the wider Caribbean region.”
Islands as sources of knowledge and solutions
ISISA is an international network of scholars, researchers and professionals focused on island studies: research on islands, island communities and the specific challenges they face.
During the 21st Islands of the World Conference in Curaçao, themes such as sustainability, climate change, economy, culture, governance, health and the resilience of island communities will take centre stage.
The conference theme is “Navigating Challenges, Building Global Resilience: Island Solutions”. The central idea is that islands are not only places facing challenges. They are also places where knowledge, experience and solutions are developed that can be valuable to other parts of the world.
The scientific preparation of the conference is supported by local partners from the University of Curaçao, University of Aruba, University of St. Martin, CARMABI, NAAM and the Ministry of Economic Development of Curaçao. International researchers and members of the wider ISISA network will also contribute to the scientific programme.
Preparations in Curaçao are already well underway
Preparations for the 2027 conference are already in full swing. The conference website is live, the organisation has secured important funding and sponsorship, and the conference venue, Renaissance Wind Creek Curaçao Resort, has been confirmed.
Work is also underway on a social and cultural programme that will allow international visitors to experience Curaçao and gain a better understanding of the wider Caribbean context.
Alongside the scientific programme, the organisation aims to create opportunities for students, early-career researchers and local institutions to actively participate in the conference.
“This is an important opportunity for Curaçao,” Pin explained. “We are bringing an international scientific network to our island, while at the same time giving our own researchers, institutions and expertise an international platform.”
In the coming months, the organisation will continue to develop the scientific programme, the Scientific Committee and the next phase of preparations. The call for abstracts will open in 2026.
