Willemstad, December 12, 2016 – CIBC FirstCaribbean’s annual Walk for the Cure has raised US$500,000.00 in 2016 and of that Nafl. 38,000.00 was raised in Curaçao and will go to Prinses Wilhelmina Fonds.

The walk, held during the month of October, united over 20,000 passionate participants in 17 countries in which the bank operates, in a demonstration of their commitment to assist those affected by cancer.

The funds raised through the walk are invested towards the care and support of persons fighting the disease of cancer across the Caribbean. The Walk for the Cure was started in 2012, as part of the bank’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

All proceeds generated over the years have be used to support critical cancer care, purchase vital equipment necessary to treat patients and host general education programs to create greater awareness of the disease across the region.

This year, the 2016 walk for the Cure in Curaçao partnered with Princes Wilhelmina Fonds again. The major sponsors for the event included Always, Amigoe, Antilliaans Dagblad, Curaçao Ports Authority, Ensure, Extra, HBN Law, Heineken, LBH Group, Listerine, Neutrogena, NuCuraçao Windparken B.V., Splenda and Tampax.

“We are glad we could contribute for the 5th year in a row in the fight against cancer and partner with Princess Wilhelmina Fonds to invest the generated funds in the most effective way towards this cause in our community. We thank all our sponsors, contributors, participants, volunteers and staff for their contribution to this year’s success” said Ortela. “We thank you for your ongoing commitment to the growth of the event each year,” said Lysaira Ortela, Marketing Manager for CIBC FirstCaribbean in the Dutch Caribbean.

Each year, the Walk for the Cure is held to coincide with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s CIBC Run for the Cure sponsored by the bank’s parent company, CIBC. CIBC has been supporting this event for more than 20 years, donating millions to breast cancer research in Canada.
