Curacao Jazz Legend John James Willekes Performs for
INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY
Willemstad/ In celebration of International Jazz Day 2019, local jazz legend, saxophonist, John James Willekes “JJ COOL” together with the band, The Cool Jazz Quintet, will give a performance during DMO “Punda Vibes” on Plaza Jojo Correa, downtown, in a free program organized by DOJACMC Foundation entitled “Curacao Jazz Salutes African Fashion”. The repertoire will consist of traditional and modern jazz compositions by jazz greats and original compositions by band director, JJ COOL, with arrangements by music legend, Erwin Prudencia. The quintet will consist of seasoned local jazz musicians. The event sponsor, in conjunction with DMO includes several local businesses in the downtown area.
International Jazz day/IJD, is held globally on April 30th in hundreds of participating countries around the world. DOJACMC Foundation, however, is set to celebrate IJD-Curacao, on Thursday, April 25th, during DMO’s weekly presentation of Punda Vibes, from 6:00PM to 10:00PM.
In a tribute to the upcoming Mother’ Day celebration, local African born fashion designer, Inonge Anadala, will showcase her original, African inspired fashion design clothing and bags, as well as a special swimwear section. Models will be adorned in jewelry from selected African countries.
A vendor market will also be on the plaza with beautiful gifts for Mother’s day, in which many items and art work displayed are handmade. Patrons will also have an opportunity to participate in a raffle drawing for items displayed on the raffle table. Tasty African snacks, pizza, hotdogs, ices and beverages will also be available. Open bar from Licores Maduro.
According to event organizer and Host “LadyMo” Mrs. Edna Monifa Willekes-King, the purpose of the event is to expose the community and especially our tourist to two international art forms while in Curacao, during the IJD celebration, in a fun, relaxing and creative atmosphere in the middle of downtown. The foundation plans to record the event and submit it to IJD Outreach marketing director in Washington, D.C., to be archived and streamed on April 30th, in Melbourne, Australia, alone with other participating countries celebrating IJD-2019. Proceeds from the event will help to benefit DOJACMC Foundation’s 3LC “Look, Listen & Learn” free jazz concerts for children in the neighborhoods.
