Twee mannen veroordeeld voor poging doodslag
Het Gerecht in Eerste Aanleg van Bonaire heeft op 16 februari 2023 twee mannen veroordeeld voor poging doodslag en openlijk geweld. Het gaat om de 19-jarige J.R. en de 33-jarige H.A.C. Beide mannen waren betrokken bij een vechtpartij in de Kaya Grandi, waarbij het slachtoffer ernstige verwondingen opliep, waar hij nog steeds last van heeft en daardoor niet kan werken.
In de vroege ochtend 14 oktober 2022, vond er vechtpartij plaats tussen vier mannen in de Kaya Grandi. De aanleiding van deze vechtpartij was onduidelijk, maar de betrokkenen hadden allemaal veel alcohol gebruikt. De beelden van deze vechtpartij werden veelal gedeeld op social media, wat zorgde voor een gevoel van verontwaardiging en onveiligheid bij de bevolking van Bonaire.
De twee halfbroers, 19-jarige J.R. en 33-jarige H.A.C., werden verdacht van poging doodslag en openlijk geweld. Het slachtoffer werd meerdere malen tegen zijn hoofd geschopt en kan door de opgelopen verwondingen nog steeds niet werken.
Beide mannen zijn veroordeeld voor poging tot doodslag. De 19-jarige J.R. werd veroordeeld tot 18 maanden jeugddetentie waarvan een groot deel voorwaardelijk met een proeftijd van twee (2) jaar. Onderdeel van dit vonnis is ook toezicht van Reclassering, het volgen van een alcohol en geweld preventie training en eventuele behandeling bij het Mental Health Caribbean (MHC). De 33-jarige H.A.C. is veroordeeld tot vijf (5) jaar gevangenisstraf. Hij heeft inmiddels hoger beroep ingesteld tegen deze uitspraak.
Het Openbaar Ministerie hoopt dat deze uitspraken een preventief effect zullen hebben om dergelijk ‘zinloos geweld’ te voorkomen en dat de bewoners van Bonaire zich veiliger kunnen voelen.

Two men sentenced for attempted manslaughter
On February 16, 2023 the Court of the First Instance in Bonaire, convicted two men of attempted manslaughter and open violence. They are 19-year-old J.R. and 33-year-old H.A.C. Both men were involved in a fight in the Kaya Grandi, in which the victim sustained serious injuries, which he still suffers from and is unable to work as a result.
In the early morning October 14, 2022, a fight took place between four men in the Kaya Grandi. The cause of this fight was unclear, but those involved had all consumed a lot of alcohol. The images of this fight were mostly shared on social media, which created a sense of outrage and insecurity among the people of Bonaire.
The two half-brothers, 19-year-old J.R. and 33-year-old H.A.C., were suspected of attempted manslaughter and public violence. The victim was kicked several times in the head and is still unable to work due to the injuries sustained.
Both men were convicted of attempted manslaughter. The 19-year-old J.R. was sentenced to 18 months of juvenile detention, much of which was suspended with a probation period of two (2) years. Part of this sentence includes supervision by Probation, attending alcohol and violence prevention training and possible treatment at Mental Health Caribbean (MHC). The 33-year-old H.A.C. was sentenced to five (5) years in prison. He has since appealed this sentence.
The Prosecutor’s Office hopes that these sentences will have a preventive effect to stop such “senseless violence” and that the residents of Bonaire can feel safer.
