Hats off to Dreams presents: La Furia de Hispania

The untamed soul, the vibrant spirit, and the distinctive art.

WILLEMSTAD — For Carnival 2026, Hats off to Dreams invites the community of Curacao to embark on a journey across the Atlantic to the Iberian peninsula: The land of Flamenco, Picasso and Gaudí. Throughout history, diversity and tradition have danced and intertwined to create a rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, art and architecture that make Spain distinctive in the world.

All of these elements are represented in our costume, from the Spanish Gypsies “Los Gitanos” to the expressive Art Form of Flamenco. The various costume styles represent different influences of Spanish historic traditions, culture, music and art.

The main fabric in our capes and dresses are printed with a custom design inspired by ‘Azulejos Andaluces’ (Andalusian Tiles) featuring our HOTD logo. These tiles draw from rich Middle Eastern, North African and European cultural influences. The Floral motifs on the Spanish tiles represent harmony in the natural world.

Our headpieces are a twist on the Spanish sombrero Cordobés, interpreted in an artistic format for both male and female. The limited costume female headpieces incorporate different patterns of Spanish lace veils, called ‘mantillas’ and a carnvalesque interpretation of the ‘peineta’ with elements such as flowers and guitars. Both are iconic elements of Flamenco, a powerful art form that emanates from the heart and soul of Spain.

‘Duende’ is a term often used in Spain to describe the power of expression. It is a force that speaks through intense emotion and passion beyond words. It is a quality that must be found within oneself, requiring deep understanding and vulnerability and the audacity to surrender completely to the moment. Once duende is unleashed, it captivates audiences with its raw and untamed power and emotional intensity. As a Carnival group, Hats off to Dreams aims to inspire expression, creativity, and the embrace of what makes each person unique; our Duende. Our Carnival is filled with the essence of the ‘Duende’ of our artists, performers, and participants. Let’s embrace that passion and celebrate our carnival!

Introducing Hats off to Dreams Kids

To carry forward the legacy of Hats Off To Dreams, we proudly introduce our youth group, Hats Off To Dreams Kids, who will debut with the same creativity and culture of La Furia de Hispania in their costumes, but with an emphasis on joy, spontaneity, and pure energy that only our children can bring.

Every time the kids sway with the cape, it is a shout of “Olé!” an expression of happiness, courage, and admiration for the moment. For us, “Olé” is not just a cry of joy, but a way to give life and emotion to everything we do. It is a call to enjoy the moment, to feel the music, and to express ourselves with pride.

In our “Olé,” there is the happiness of our culture, the inspiration of Flamenco, and the passion of a people who celebrate life with all their hearts.

The goal of Hats Off To Dreams Kids is to inspire our children to explore other cultures and to embrace the world with open minds, to learn that every culture has its own beauty, its own story, and its own rhythm. We celebrate Spain in its entirety, its art, music, color, and unity, and at the same time, we empower ourselves to be creative, expressive, and proud of who we are.
