President of Parliament pays courtesy visit to the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana
The President of Parliament, the Hon. Sarah A. Wescot-Williams, currently in Accra, Ghana, to participate in and chair the International Conference on Gender Equality (ICGE-25), taking place from November 20–22, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, at the Parliament House.
During the visit, the President and the Speaker, joined by Members of Parliament, the Hon. Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah and the Hon. Patricia Appiagyei, as well as parliamentary staff, engaged in discussions on the role of women in society and development, and the importance of women’s participation in Parliament and leadership positions.
Speaker Bagbin reflected on the ongoing implementation of the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill 2024 and the work of the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, known as LiPS (Ladies in Parliamentary Service), emphasizing the need for continued progress. He also highlighted the historical and cultural ties between Ghana, St. Martin, and the wider Caribbean.
The President and the Speaker also explored opportunities for collaboration and networking among parliaments and countries, underscoring the value of regional and global partnerships in advancing human development. President Wescot-Williams encouraged strengthened cooperation between the Parliament of Ghana and the Parliament of Sint Maarten to enhance diplomatic, developmental, and parliamentary relations. Both Speakers agreed to exchange copies of their Constitutions and Standing Orders to support further research, institutional development, and mutual learning.
In the afternoon, President Wescot-Williams also visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum, and Museum, as well as Black Star Square—commissioned by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first Prime Minister and President, in 1957 to commemorate the nation’s independence.
