Kòrsou ta Limpi

On 26 September, thousands of us will be standing in the same few streets in Otrobanda.

Kaya Kaya started in 2018 as a neighbourhood celebration in Ferdinandstraat. Since then it has grown into something that runs all year, through murals, workshops, restorations and a lot of people who keep showing up, with the Street Party as the biggest day of it. The promise underneath has stayed the same the whole way: leave it better behind.

Our Kaya Kaya cups have been part of the Street Party since we can remember, and Firgos has supplied them from the start. Turn it over and you’ll find a small number 5 inside the recycling triangle. That number tells you what the cup is made of: polypropylene, or PP. It is one of the toughest everyday plastics, it handles heat, and it is considered one of the safest for food and drink. It is made to be used again.

And it really is. The cup goes home with you, and it keeps going. Cups from earlier editions are still in use years later. Chances are someone reading this has one in their kitchen right now.

Wherever you’re standing on 26 September, there will be a bin nearby. Look for the Firgos x Kaya Kaya flags. There you will find bins that carry recycled Firgos trash bags, spread throughout the festival so nobody has to walk far to do the right thing.

A clean Otrobanda on a Sunday morning is a good start. The bigger wish is a Kòrsou limpi: an island where clean streets are simply normal, every day of the year.

That wish is shared by a lot of people on this island, many of them working on it long before us and alongside us.

For our part, it also means more green in the neighbourhood. More shade, more plants, more places to sit and enjoy each others company (Yes, this is a hint of something new coming).

On 26 September from 4 PM, the Kaya Kaya Street Party brings thousands of us into the streets of Otrobanda, across 7 areas. Your cup is waiting at the entrance.

For one night, Otrobanda opens its streets to all of us. On Sunday morning, we hand them back the way we’d want our own street handed back. So, let’s leave it better behind.
