Op zaterdag 11 januari om 16.00 uur zal er aan de kust van Pos Salu, bij Sint Jorisbaai, een onthulling plaatsvinden van een bijzonder kunstwerk. Dit kunstwerk vertegenwoordigt de samenwerking tussen de kunstenaars Avantia Damberg en Maura Biava en is gerealiseerd in een periode van tweeënhalf jaar.

De familie Braarudosphaeraceae zijn eencellige fytoplanktonische algen aan de kust die worden gekenmerkt door het dragen van kalkschubben met vijfvoudige symmetrie, pentalieten genaamd. De fylogenie en ecologie van de Braarudosphaeraceae zijn van groot belang omdat ze een lang fossielenbestand hebben dat teruggaat tot het vroege Krijt [1], en ze zijn één van de overlevenden van de massale uitsterving van K/Pg die resulteerde in de ondergang van ca. 76% van de fossiele soorten [2] waaronder ongeveer 90% van de coccolithoforen (zogenaamde kalkhoudende nanofossielen) [1].

De geometrische vorm van dit micro-organisme is de dodecaëder: 12 vlakken aan elkaar geconnecteerd waarbij elk vlak de vorm van een vijfhoek heeft. Die vijfhoek herhaalt zich in de natuur voortdurend in de vormen die de kunstenaars als inspiratiebron hebben: cacti, bloemen, schelpen en dergelijke. Deze vorm, als archetype voor het leven, is de basis voor de sculptuur. De combinatie van water en zuurstof brengt leven op onze planeet en dit zijn de elementen waaruit het beeld bestaat.

Het beeld, geplaatst op een vijfhoekig voetstuk, bestaat uit een metalen dodecaëder, verwijzend naar het fytoplankton dat zorgt voor zuurstof in water. Vanuit de dodecaëder spuit water omhoog in de vorm van metalen buizen. Deze buizen hebben luchtbellen die ook uit aluminium zijn gesneden. Ze kunnen bewegen met de wind.

Deze sculptuur is gemaakt in opdracht van stichting Uniek Curaçao die samen met Stichting Kunst in de Openbare Ruimte het illegaal dumpen van afval in de natuur wil tegengaan met kunst. Het is het 5 beeld van het nieuwe Pos Salu Open Air Beeldenpark.

Het project is mogelijk gemaakt door SKOR Kòrsou en Stichting Uniek Curacao met financiële steun van het Mondriaan Fonds en Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied.

On Saturday 11 January at 16:00, a special artwork will be unveiled on the coast of Pos Salu, near Sint Jorisbaai. This artwork represents the collaboration between artists Avantia Damberg and Maura Biava and was realised over a period of two and a half years.

The Braarudosphaeraceae family are unicellular coastal phytoplankton algae characterised by bearing calcareous scales with five-fold symmetry, called pentalites. The phylogeny and ecology of the Braarudosphaeraceae are of great importance because they have a long fossil record dating back to the Early Cretaceous [1], and they are one of the survivors of the K/Pg mass extinction that resulted in the extinction of approximately 76% of fossil species [2] including approximately 90% of coccolithophores (so-called calcareous nanofossils) [1]. The geometric shape of this micro-organism is the dodecahedron: 12 surfaces connected to each other, each surface having the shape of a pentagon. This pentagon is constantly repeated in nature in the shapes that the artists have as a source of inspiration: cacti, flowers, shells and the like. This shape, as an archetype for life, is the basis for the sculpture. The combination of water and oxygen brings life to our planet and these are the elements that make up the sculpture.

The sculpture, placed on a pentagonal pedestal, consists of a metal dodecahedron, referring to the phytoplankton that provides oxygen in water. Water sprays upwards from the dodecahedron in the form of metal tubes. These tubes have air bubbles that are also cut from aluminum. They can move with the wind.

This sculpture was commissioned by the Uniek Curaçao foundation, which, together with the Kunst in de Openbare Ruimte foundation, wants to combat the illegal dumping of waste in nature with art. It is the 5th sculpture of the new Pos Salu Open Air Sculpture Park.
