THE NETHERLANDS (THE HAGUE) – Minister Plenipotentiary Drs. Gracita R. Arrindell, recently attended the prestigious 2026 Appeltjes van Oranje (Apples of Orange) award ceremony, at Noordeinde Palace in The Hague. Her Majesty Queen Máxima presented awards to three outstanding social initiatives making a meaningful difference in communities throughout the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix were also present at the annual ceremony, organized by the Oranje Fonds (Orange Fund), which recognizes organizations and community initiatives that contribute to a more inclusive, connected and resilient society.
The theme for the 2026 awards was “Samen armoede doorbreken” (Breaking the Cycle of Poverty Together), placing particular emphasis on organizations working to address poverty, financial hardship and social exclusion through sustainable, community-based solutions.
The annual awards recognize initiatives that go beyond providing immediate assistance by empowering individuals and families with the knowledge, skills, confidence and opportunities necessary to improve their circumstances and achieve greater independence.
Among this year’s three award recipients was the Mega D Youth Foundation from Sint Eustatius, whose work focuses on creating opportunities for children and young people through education, personal development and community engagement.
The foundation provides a supportive environment where young people can develop their talents, strengthen their self-confidence and acquire essential life skills. Its initiatives include homework assistance, educational support, sports, music, creative activities and other programs designed to help young people realize their potential.
The recognition of the Mega D Youth Foundation represents an important achievement for Sint Eustatius and demonstrates the valuable contribution that community-based organizations throughout the Dutch Caribbean make toward addressing social challenges and improving opportunities for future generations.
The other two award recipients were Stichting Doors Wide Open, based in Hof van Twente, which assists individuals and families experiencing financial difficulties, and Stek – Buurt & Lukas, based in The Hague, which provides community support, practical assistance and opportunities for social participation. Stek received the prestigious Grote Appel (Grand Apple) award.
Each recipient received a bronze statuette designed by Princess Beatrix and a financial award of €25,000 to support the continued development of their social initiatives.
Minister Plenipotentiary Arrindell’s attendance underscored the importance of recognizing social initiatives that contribute to strengthening communities and creating opportunities for vulnerable groups across the Kingdom.
The theme of the 2026 awards Samen Armoede Doorbreken (breaking the cycle of Poverty together) placed particular emphasis on organizations working to address poverty, financial hardship, and social exclusion through sustainable community-based solutions.
This theme carries particular relevance for the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, where community organizations play an important role in supporting families, empowering young people, addressing socioeconomic challenges and promoting greater social inclusion.
Initiatives recognized by the Oranje Fonds demonstrate the value of cooperation among governments, civil society organizations, volunteers, the private sector and local communities’ organizations in developing sustainable responses to poverty and inequality.
The awards also highlight the essential role of volunteerism, community participation, and grassroots leadership in building stronger and more inclusive and resilient societies. The dedication of volunteers and community organizations is essential to building stronger, more inclusive communities.
Their commitment, compassion, and perseverance make a tangible difference in people’s lives. We must continue to encourage and support these efforts, while exploring opportunities to learn from successful initiatives throughout the Kingdom, Minister Arrindell emphasized.
Although Sint Maarten was not among this year’s award recipients, Minister Arrindell encourages the island’s volunteer community and social organizations to continue their valuable work in improving the quality of life of all citizens, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances.
The Oranje Fonds was established in 2002 and supports social initiatives throughout the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Through its annual Appeltjes van Oranje awards, the organization recognizes projects that bring people together, encourage participation and create lasting positive change within communities.
